In Their New Music Video, ANNA MARIA Tell a Real Story from Their Own Lives

Can every unique love story have something in common? Only if twin girls fall in love... with twin boys. ANNA MARIA offer their own take on this remarkable story in the music video for “Chomu” (“Why”). The video was directed by Yura Dvizhon, an unconventional Ukrainian music video maker whose work aims not only to impress, but also to secure a prestigious place for Ukrainian music on the international stage. Anna: “Probably the question we get asked most often is: ‘Have you ever fallen in love with the same guy?’ That is exactly the theme this video explores. It really did happen to us once — though, to be fair, it was back in sixth grade.” Maria: “Our video tells a story. But at the same time, we tried to make the kind of video that gives the viewer the feeling of having been at one of our concerts.” In the video, Anna and Maria play the guitar and drums themselves. And while the sisters have been on friendly terms with the guitar for a long time, they had to learn the drums especially for the shoot. The director's comment: “Twins often find themselves falling in love with the same person, but that person doesn't always have a double of their own to help resolve the conflict. I believe my collaboration with the duo ANNA MARIA was bound to happen sooner or later, because I know better than anyone what it's like to have a twin brother from the very first day of your life. I really wanted my first work for the girls to be symbolic in that sense, and to carry musicality, positive emotions and a touch of humor.” Both the director and ANNA MARIA make no secret of having drawn inspiration from the aesthetics of the '80s. “It's a kind of minimalism — simplicity, but done with taste and a unique style of its own. You pay attention not to the surface, but to the essence itself,” say the sisters.
